Tax Eligibility Calculator
uniform tax refund

You can apply for a uniform tax refund if you meet the following criteria:

  1. You wear a recognisable uniform to work (see below for what this means).
  2. You have to wash your uniform at your own expense (i.e. your employer doesn’t provide free laundry facilities or reimburse you for the cleaning costs)
  3. You paid tax in the year you’re claiming for.

What counts as a uniform?

According to HMRC, A uniform for tax purposes is essentially any item of clothing that identifies you as an employee of a particular workplace. This can be company-branded clothing or a highly distinctive uniform.

You can also claim if you have to wear smart attire that you purchased yourself and also wash them at your own expense.

Mileage Allowance Relief

Claim mileage allowance relief from HRMC

If you are required to use your own vehicle for work, you may be able to claim Mileage Allowance Relief from HMRC based on the number of business miles you travel. This tax relief could be worth up to 45p for every mile you have travelled backdated from 4 years.

What if my employer reimburses me?

You may still be able to claim depending on how much your employer pays you per mile. There are specific amounts on which HMRC are prepared to allow tax relief. If your employer pays you less than this, you can claim tax relief on the difference.

You may be able to claim tax relief for additional household costs if you have to work at home for all or part of the week.
What you can claim for
You can only claim for things to do with your work, such as:
• business phone calls
• gas and electricity for your work area

How much you can claim
You can either claim tax relief on:
• £6 a week from 6 April 2020 (for previous tax years the rate is £4 a week) – you will not need to keep evidence of your extra costs
• the exact amount of extra costs you’ve incurred above the weekly amount – you’ll need evidence such as receipts, bills or contracts
You’ll get tax relief based on the rate at which you pay tax.
Example
If you pay the 20% basic rate of tax and claim tax relief on £6 a week, you would get £1.20 per week in tax relief (20% of £6).
You can claim for this tax year and the 4 previous tax years.
